Privacy
Paw Lanterns is run by [OPERATOR NAME] ([COUNTRY]). Contact: privacy@pawlanterns.com.
The short version
- You don't need an account to visit, light candles or leave flowers. To make a spot for your pet or write a note, you sign in with Google.
- From Google we keep only a one-way scrambled version of your Google account ID. We don't keep your email, name, photo or contacts, and we never see your password.
- We don't sell your information, and we don't use advertising or cross-site tracking.
- What you put on a memorial (photos, names, words, notes) is visible to everyone who visits.
What we collect
- What you choose to share: the display name you pick, memorial details (your pet's name, years, words), the photos you upload, and the notes you leave. Photos are resized in your browser before upload, which removes hidden data such as location. Each photo is checked automatically by Google Cloud Vision for sexual or violent content. Google processes the image for this check and doesn't keep it. A photo the check isn't sure about waits until a person has looked at it.
- Signing in: when you sign in with Google, Google confirms who you are to us. We keep a one-way hash of your Google account ID (so we know which spots are yours and can stop accounts that break our rules), and a sign-in cookie that lasts up to 30 days or until you sign out. Google's own privacy policy applies to your Google account.
- Things your browser stores for you: your display name, how your person looks, a random visitor ID (so you can light one candle per memorial each day), and the private key that lets you decorate your pet's spot. These stay in your browser's local storage. We don't use advertising cookies.
- Technical information: your IP address and basic request logs, used to run the service, prevent abuse (for example rate limits), and keep it secure. Where we keep IP-derived data with candles or reports, it is stored as a one-way hash.
- Live presence: while you're in the meadow, your avatar's position and display name are shared with other visitors in the same space. We don't keep a history of where you walked.
- Reports: if you report something, we keep the report and the reason so we can review it.
- Support payments: if you choose to support the meadow, the payment is handled by Ko-fi (ko-fi.com). We receive your name or message only if you choose to share it, and we never see your card details.
Why we use it
To show memorials and the live meadow, to let you decorate your own pet's spot, to keep the meadow kind and safe (moderation, abuse prevention), and to understand basic usage so we can improve it.
Where it's stored
The meadow runs on servers provided by Fly.io in Sydney, Australia. Some providers we use (such as font delivery and payments) may process data in other countries, including the United States. We take reasonable steps to make sure they protect it.
How long we keep it
Memorials stay online while Paw Lanterns operates, unless you ask us to remove them or they break our rules. Notes you hide are removed from view. Server logs are kept for up to [30] days. If we ever close the meadow, we'll give at least 90 days' notice and a way to download your photos and words where we can.
Your choices
- You can change or hide things on your pet's spot with your private edit link.
- If you've lost your edit link and want a memorial changed or removed, email privacy@pawlanterns.com with enough detail for us to check it's yours.
- You can ask us what we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it. We'll respond within 30 days.
- You can clear your browser storage at any time to reset your name, look and visitor ID.
Children
Paw Lanterns is meant for people aged 13 and over. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has shared personal information here, email us and we'll remove it.
Complaints
Please contact us first. If you're in Australia and not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au).
